Nothing like seeing the fishies and corals in their natural environment. Those pics are too cool. Love the shaka pic Rod! Who took that one? The first time I went to Hanauma Bay my cousin (who was born and raised in Hawaii Kai, Oahu) and I snorkled out past the shallow worn down reef in the breakers. We saw way cooler stuff out there. My feet were even picked at by some of the fishes - unsure which ones they were. I heard they were shutting the Bay down for a period of time during the year. Are they still doing that?
I'd be like you and spend all my time in the water especially with an underwater case for my digi-cam.
Keep the pics coming dood!!!

Thanks, thanks, thanks...!!!
My buddy and best-man Bruce took the picture as well as some of the others. The trip was even more fun that so many friends and family were over there with us. I've never been snorkelling with a dozen family and friends before.
Hanuama Bay closes every Tuesday and the South shores get Box Jellies on the 8th day after full moons so you've got to keep your eyes peeled then. I'm not sure if they're doing any longer shut downs. If they do there are other places to see.
When the tide is right the cable channel will suck you out through the buoys quickly into clearer waters. Fins are recommended though. Witches Brew on the right side is pretty diverse with all kinds of stuff including large eels. I haven't gone out much farther than half way since it starts to get too deep to see (40-50feet?). I have yet to see sharks and rays but I'll keep looking. At a dive shop we heard a diver in K Bay was suddenly surrounded by hundreds of baby hammerheads in one of the deeper channels. That would've been something to see but creepy.

Yea I've heard about Witches Brew, but there are so many other places to dive and snorkle just on Oahu alone. Sharks Cove and Magic Island (where I was certified) are pretty good spots. Also heard about the power plant on the Ewa side I believe where the outflow, if you are up for a ride, will send you out to sea. Very dangerous though, when I was living in Ewa Beach some dood died there, it was all over the news.
Talking about Hanauma Bay . . . On the left side if you walk around the point you can get flushed by the "Toilet Bowl." A big pit in the rock where the waves go in and out. Also, there's a few tunnels you can swim through if you have a death wish. I did the bowl, my cousin swam through the tunnel. Haoles sat there in awe, it was pretty funny.

I've gone out towards Magic Island but haven't gone all the way out. I got a little distracted at the eels in the shallow area of Ala Moana Beach Park. I've heard of the Power Plant also or electric beach. I've heard it's very good there but you should be very aware of the outflow. I don't take chances when going alone and stick to populated areas. Otherwise we use Ab-diver safety rules... One up and one down, never both diving at the same time. I liked Sharks Cove a lot but have only been there one trip when visiting in the Summer. We usually go around Christmas time when Winnie is visiting her family so it's always huge surf on the North Shrore at that time.
Ya know I've never since 91' walked out to see toilet bowl. I've heard that it's blocked off now. Winnie and her friends remember sitting in it and getting washed way up and down the bowl though. Also the deeper outside areas of Hanuama Bay are where sharks, rays and other big things swim but they say to watch out for the current outside the bay and that it's very easy to be washed out to sea.
I was really impressed by Maui though. Just the dive map alone has a lot of marked spots, and Black Rock just off of the resorts at Kaanapali was an excellent spot.

Hey, Thanks Alan!!! Here's some more. These are pics from Maui at Kaanapali, at the north end where a lava flow ends a sandy beach, known as Black Rock.
BIG Honu - Green Sea Turtle. This guy/gal was 3 1/2 feet along the shell.
Bruce in frame for scale...
da Rogue.
Some sort of fry hiding at the surface.

A basketball-diameter spaghetti worm!
Peacock Grouper - Roi. I was about a foot from this guy when the flash went off and he turned on me like an angry eel after this pic!!!

Trumpetfish - Nunu. There are a number of colored varieties in the islands.
Stripebelly Puffer - O'opu-hue

Here we go again... More of Black Rock and some "land" shots of NW Maui.
Best man and Bride checking out the "locals."
Hawaiian Sargeants, black durgeons and humuhumunukunukuapuaa
More assorted...
Unicorn tangs joined us...
This was a very strange "mutant" Black Durgeon. It had either lost it's tail long before or grew to an adult with this deformity. It did well enough but did seem to work a little harder to get up to speed.
The port at Lahaina.
Abundant urchins along the Lahaina boardwalk.
The path to Honolua bay, another popular dive spot.
I hope I'm not boring anyone.
